WASHINGTON -- When computers break down, you realize just how tough they are to live without.
That's why News4 teamed up with Washington Consumer's Checkbook Magazine to show you the top shops for computer service and repair in our area.

For starters, shopping for a price isn't easy because many shops charge at least $50 to diagnose your problem and give you an estimate. Some charge more than $100.

Washington Consumer Checkbook evaluated 46 area repair shops. Only the following five received the top rating for both quality and service:

BoonPC.com, Bethesda, Md.
Computer Place, Gaithersburg, Md.
Terabyte Systems, Silver Spring, Md.
Computer Service Design, Vienna, Va.
Platinum Micro Electronics, Manassas, Va.
Checkbook found that it usually makes more sense to bring your computer to the shop. It's also cheaper than having someone come to your home.

Checkbook found wide differences in prices. For example, replacing a power supply in a computer ranged from $33 to $246.

Sometimes, the computer is not worth the cost of the repairs.
